Avocado is a perfect first food. are a great first food. Most recommend a vegetable as your first few solids in an effort to encourage babies to enjoy more than sweet fruit.

While it's technically a fruit, it's not sweet like "real" fruits and it's perfectly soft right out of the "packaging" if it's ripe. This makes it ideal for self feeding and babies aged 6-9 months.

Benefits of avocado for babies

When starting solids with your little, we're looking for nutrition-packed first foods. You really can't find a better option than avocado. Here's what Fall Hill Pediatrics says on the topic.

  • Essential vitamins like A, E, C, K, B6, thiamin and niacin.
  • Great source of healthy fats.
  • Antibacterial and antimicrobial properties.
  • Aids in smooth digestion.

How to prepare and serve avocado for a baby

Avocado is the perfect first food for your baby. It's super soft naturally so it's easy to gum. But we've got to decide how to serve it!

Puree

Yes, not specifically BLW, but if it's what your baby enjoys or you're not comfortable yet veggie purees are easy.

A whole avocado tossed into a blender or food processor should blend easy. A little liquid (it's a great use for breast milk can be added if you need to thin it out.

Practice BLW with purees by offering preloaded spoons, and here is my post on the Best Baby Led Weaning Spoons + How to Use Them!

Mashed

Mashed is an easy first introduction to avocado and how I typically do it. Grab a ripe fruit and mash with a fork.

A bit of texture is fine, but avoid any big chunks if giving to a baby 6-9 months.

Feed to baby on the tray, allowing them to use their hand and fingers to pick up and feed themselves. Alternately, give baby preloaded spoons with the avocado mush.

If your baby has tried a few things and you're having it with dinner, give baby a bit of guac! Trying new flavors and combinations is a fun part of BLW. Just keep an eye on added salt.

It's also a great option to grab for babies when you're baby led weaning on the go, since many stores will have guac on the menu! (Just check for salt and spiciness.)

Whole

Avocados are great for serving whole, but they can be tricky as they are slippery!

If baby is new to BLW, try leaving a bit of the peel (wash it before cutting) on as a grip. It will leave a bit of soft flesh revealed, but give an easy way for baby to grab. Another option is rolling in crushed cereal or even oatmeal or oat flour to get some extra grip

Diced

Cutting them can be a great option to hone baby's pincer grip. Cut your avocado into small pieces and serve. It might be hard to grasp. Just like with baby led weaning banana, rolling in crushed cereal can help that.

Smoothie

I love smoothies for kids of all ages, and avocados are the ideal addition! Make sure whatever you're putting into your smoothie is something your kiddo has already tried and shown no allergies to. They make for a rich, creamy smoothie acked with healthy fats.

It would be a great addition to our easy spinach smoothie recipe.
